Are taxi prices too high? Do the math!

Taxi transfers - are they expensive afterall?

Taxi prices & transfers in Crete

“Getting a taxi is expensive”. This is what you all think, i am almost certain about it.

Taxi transfers has been classified as something expensive in everyone’s mind as it is among the most pricey means of transportation that someone can use. That is partially true, perhaps they are a bit pricey but are taxi transfers really expensive?

Value-for-money vs. the price tag

Any product or service has specific characteristics that make it somehow different from a similar category’s products or services. What it really makes it unique though is what the person that will buy that service is looking for.

Our needs determine the value something and every service has two totally different sides to think about; the price tag and the value it has for you.

Getting a taxi from Chania airport or taking the bus???

Having the above in mind, a taxi transfer in Crete perhaps isn’t that expensive afterall.

Let’s say that you are coming for holidays in Crete and you are looking for a transfer from Chania airport to Platanias area. Let’s also suppose that you are 3 persons in your company. The two main options to get to your hotel are: a) taking a private taxi transfer from Chania airport to Platanias and b) getting a shuttle airport transfer provided by your tour operator or an independent online booking agent.

Now, let’s do some simple Math:

a)  A private roundtrip taxi transfer from Chania airport to Platanias would cost approximately 90 euros while a shuttle bus transfer would cost (in average) 24 euros per person.  “Ohh!!! 90 euros to 24€ ? Wow, that’s another 66 euros more! The taxi option is expensive!” (is it???)

b) Actually, for the 3 of you it is 90€ vs. 72€. Therefore, the actual price difference is 18 euros more, not 66. “Really??? so, it is more expensive just by 18 euros than the shuttle transfer?” (yes!)

c) And those 18 euros are actually just 6€ more expensive per person for a roundtrip transfer!

d) What we really end up is that the “expensive” taxi is just 3€ extra than the shuttle bus per way, per person

Let me rephrase that, just in case you missed it:

If you pay additionally 3 more euros per person, you will get a direct and private taxi transfer from Chania airport to your hotel in Platanias. Yes that is correct! Just 3 more euros (per person) and you will be at your hotel in about 40 minutes, checking-in and going to your room while the rest of the group will be still in that shuttle bus of the tour operator (most probably just about to start from the airport!), making -i don’t know how many – en route stops to drop off people to different hotels.

After you have been already in a 4-hours flight to Chania i have a feeling that these extra 3 euros on the “price tag” that buys you a much better value-for-money transfer option doesn’t making the taxi transfer from Chania airport exactly an expensive service.
